Zithromax

Drug Uses

Zithromax is used for treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections. The drug may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How it is taken

Take Zithromax exactly as directed by your doctor. Exact dosage instructions can also be checked on the product label. It may be taken with (to avoid an upset stomach) or without food.  In order to cure the infection completely, it is recommended that you continue to use Macrobid for the full course of the treatment even if you feel better in a few days.

Failure to do this leads to the bacteria becoming resistant to treatment by Zithromax or other similar antibiotics in the future.

Missed Dosage

If you miss a dose, then you may take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, then skip it and continue with your normal dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the skipped dosage.

Overdose
The common symptoms of the diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach and vomiting. You should seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose.
 

Warnings/Precautions
If you have any medical conditions like allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, liver or kidney problems, palpitations, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding, then mention this clearly to your physician or pharmacist before you start using Zithromax.

If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Zithromax because it is unknown whether Zithromax is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.

Certain drugs can interact with Zithromax and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.

Zithromax increases your chances of being sunburned and you must avoid the sun, sunlamps or tanning booths until you learn how your body reacts to the drug. If you are venturing out into the sun, then wear protective clothing or use a sunscreen.

Do not take the drug if you are using Pimozide.

If you experience diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, or bloody stools, then contact your doctor immediately.

Long term use should be avoided as it may cause a second infection. Seek medical attention immediately if a second infection is seen.

Zithromax is to be used only in bacterial infections and not in viral infections.
It reduces the effectiveness of your birth control drug and you may want to use an alternative contraceptive.

Use with caution in children less than 16 years of age.

Possible Side Effects
Some of the common side effects are Diarrhea, headache, loose stools, nausea, stomach pain and vomiting. You may seek medical attention if any of these symptoms become bothersome.

In extreme cases, there can be a severe allergic reaction showing symptoms like rash, hives, itching, tightness in the chest, difficulty in breathing, swelling on the face, mouth and lips, palpitations, muscle weakness, pounding in the chest, blistered and peeling skin, seizure, severe diarrhea, stomach cramps and yellowing of the eyes. Seek medical attention immediately if you see any of these side effects.
